The Sidney Seaside Sculpture Walk is one step closer to Reality.

On Monday February 28, 2012 at the Town of Sidney Council Meeting, the Council unanimously agreed to the recommendations of recommendations of the Sculpture Walk Acceptance Committee to enter into formal contracts with 12 artists to display their artwork on the Sidney waterfront for a two year period.

The Acceptance Committee brought together Town staff, and strong representation from the arts community, including Diane Thorpe, Larry Hanlon, JC Scott, Erin Bremner and Sidney Councilor Marilyn Loveless to review the 29 submissions.  Applications were evaluated to ensure the selected pieces would be safe and suitable for display in a harsh outdoor environment. The challenge was to select work from a variety of artists using different styles and materials.  After a good deal of discussion the Committee decided on 12 pieces which are expected to engage, challenge and delight visitors and residents alike.

The 12 sculptures chosen for installation later this year are the first installment of a an outdoor sculpture gallery which will grow every year. When the vision is fully realized the sculpture walk will extend the entire 2.5 km Heart Smart Walk along Sidney’s waterfront.  The variety and quality of the initial selections has already set a very high standard for the artists whose work which will join the collection in future years.
The artists selected are:  Armando Barbon, Ronald Crawford, Fred Dobbs, Lyle Hamer, Paul Harder, Deryk & Samuel Houston, David Hunwick, Jack Kreutzer, Philip Organ, Michael Robb, Louis-Marc Simard and Lyman Whitaker..
