The Opportunity for Artists
The Sidney Seaside Sculpture Walk (SSSW) provides an opportunity for visitors and local residents to explore Sidney’s spectacular waterfront promenade and, at the same time, to experience a variety of sculpture that capture the interest and imagination. The goal is to be as inclusive as is practical and to provide all visitors with the opportunity to discover artwork they can relate to and enjoy.
The setting will expose artists’ work to thousands of potential buyers.
The terms of the sale of any work on display will be established by the artist and subject to a 10% commission, payable to the Town of Sidney at the time of sale.
The sale of work will be supported by the Town by releasing the artist’s work up to one-year before the two-year exhibit commitment expires, if the work is sold under conditions that require its removal.
The Town of Sidney will also encourage and support the sale of artwork by providing the opportunity for corporate and individual sponsors to purchase the displayed art directly from the artist for donation to the Town. In such an instance, the sculpture will remain at the site and be added to the Town’s permanent collection. The individual, corporate or memorial donor may also qualify to receive a charitable tax receipt from the Town of Sidney.
The artist’s name and website information will be provided on signage located adjacent to their sculpture.
A picture of the artist’s sculpture will be displayed on the SSSW website with links to the artist’s website.
It is intended that the SSSW will be launched with significant media attention. A reception event will be organized to provide an opportunity for artists to meet art supporters.
News items will be featured on the SSSW web site and distributed to Friends of the SSSW and media on a regular basis to recognize and celebrate new developments including new exhibits, events surrounding the SSSW, individual, corporate, memorial sponsor news, and articles about the artists and their work.
The title of the ‘Sculpture Acceptance Committee’ (SAC) has been chosen to emphasize the mandate of the committee to ‘accept’ a variety of work from many artists, from folk art, traditional, and contemporary. The SAC has the mandate to be inclusive while maintaining a standard, with which artists will be proud to be associated.
Only one ‘Call to Artists’ is expected to take place in Phase 1, from which a minimum of 12 sculptures will be accepted for exhibit along the promenade. If the number of accepted pieces exceeds the space available for Phase 1, the accepted proposals will be held in reserve for installation at a future date, as space becomes available.
After the initial Call to Artists, artists may submit proposals for consideration by the SAC at any time. The SAC will meet annually to consider applications received over the previous twelve months. The plan is to add at least six new sculptures every year until the vision of a 2-km Sculpture Walk is fully realized.
Although there will be future opportunities for artists to have their work included in the walk, the best opportunity will be the initial Call to Artists, which closes December 30, 2011.
